FERNANDO CARRO and MERITXELL SOLER, Prestigious victories
View morePrestigious victories for the Madrid runner (with a personal best) and the Catalan in the third edition of this race.
Fernando Carro and Meritxell Soler arrived at the San Sebastian Half Marathon as favourites. And both the Madrid-born runner and the Catalan did not disappoint, with two very meritorious victories in the streets of the capital of Gipuzkoa, where the heat and the south wind also wanted to be part of the game.
A great spectacle was expected in Donostia and the elite athletes did not disappoint. In the men's race, Carro, with a finishing time of 1h03:12, beat his personal best. And this was despite the fact that he went off alone at around the eighth kilometre. During the first moments of the race, Iraitz Arrospide from Guipuzcoa and Carro took over the lead at a pace of three minutes per thousand. However, the Spaniard, who hopes to make the jump to the marathon soon, saw that he had a little bit more and decided to go away. Little by little he opened up a gap. Carro finished very strong, even with the impression that he was ready to run faster. He has a promising future on the road. And he happily left San Sebastian with his first txapela. Arrospide was second with 1h05:30 and the third classified was Ander Sagarzazu from San Sebastian (1h08:35).
In the women's race, the early withdrawal of Elena Loyo, with discomfort, meant that from the start it was clear that Meritxell Soler and Laura Méndez would be the ones fighting for victory. And although at the fifth kilometre the two international runners were in the lead, it was the Olympic runner at the Paris 2024 Marathon who opened up the gap. Soler reached the finish line after running almost three quarters of the race alone. Valencia's Méndez finished second with 1h18:15 and third, repeating her 2023 position, was Aragon's Sara Benedí (1h20:24).
The Décimas awards for the best Basque athletes went to Iraitz Arrospide, in the men's category, and to Nerea Egia, in the women's category.
A total of 3,000 runners had registered for this third edition of the San Sebastian Rural Kutxa Half Marathon, a race that continues to grow and in which 35% of the participation was female.
